In November, the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2020 students were able to tour the Henry County Jail, the Sheriff's Office, and the 911 Center of Operations. A sneak peek into the case scenario simulation room where law enforcement has the opportunity to be in real life situations without danger captured the young leaders' attention. Youth Leadership Henry Board Member Lt. Robert Howell held several fantastic open discussions with the learners about their thoughts and concerns with law enforcement in today's climate. While walking through many scenarios and possibilities, the students were able to see through a different lens and a new perspective to help understand the split second decisions that the police force has to make every day. Lt. Howell also held lively discussions about gang awareness, the difference between the right to free speech and crossing the line of hatred and malicious intent, sex trafficking and their signs, and the variations of drugs and their impact on the community.

The Henry County K-9 units treated the class to a variety of real life applications. The demonstrations were informative and allowed the learners to witness the amazing talents of trained canines. Afterwards, the officers explained a number of possible scenarios they could be put in, the processes of training and service, and how they are prepared to serve and protect our community.

Sheriff Keith McBrayer met with the class and gave a presentation on the history of law enforcement in Henry County. Did you know that Henry County was once called the "Mother of All Counties" because of its large size? It included the areas of Atlanta, Marietta, Conyers, Griffin, and Jackson at the time. Lt. P. Johnson then took the class on a tour of the jail and explained the operations of the facility where they were able to observe cellblocks, intake areas, and the day-to-day life of an inmate.

At the Henry County 911 Center, Youth Leadership Henry Board Member and EMA/E911 Director, Mr. Don Ash, talked with the leaders about how he helps the county in times of need or disaster. Mr. Ash may have been their favorite speaker of the entire day when learning that he is usually responsible for when they get snow days off from school. The class then took a tour of the facility, watching the 911 dispatchers in action. Overall, Youth Leadership Henry's November gathering was an enjoyable and educational success.
