McDonough Home to American Legion Post of the Year

MCDONOUGH, GEORGIA – September 8, 2020 – The City of McDonough is proud to be home to the American Legion Post of the Year for the State of Georgia’s 4th District, which includes posts in Henry, Butts, Crawford, Clayton, Fayette, Lamar, Monroe, Pike, Spalding and Upson Counties.  American Legion Post 516 was recently notified that they had earned the distinguished title for the 4th consecutive year, a remarkable achievement few American Legions across the Nation can claim.

To commemorate this honor, Post 516 will hold a parade around the McDonough Square beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, followed by an award presentation at the Legion at 11:00 a.m.  Commander Alton Head expressed his desire to involve the merchants in downtown McDonough, stating “Over the past several months, numerous circumstances have deeply impacted the McDonough Square, which serves as the very heart of the community, and we want to use this opportunity to bring cheer to those who could certainly use it during these difficult times.”

Post 516 member Fred Wilcox added, “Camaraderie is a fundamental concept for us, as veterans, so we want to break the barriers that seem to divide people and strengthen the ties within the community – if anyone can do that, it’s veterans.”  Evidence of Post 516’s involvement in the community is readily available through the many stories of veterans whose homes have been restored, needs have been met, and lives have been touched.

“The City of McDonough owes much gratitude to the members of American Legion Post 516, who constantly work to better our community without asking for any praise or recognition,” commented Mayor Billy Copeland.  “It is my hope that everyone will show their support for this great group of veterans by joining in the celebration – from a socially safe distance, of course – and then eating a meal at one of our fine establishments on the McDonough Square.”
