Free Farmers to Families Food Box Distribution in McDonough
McDonough, GeorgiaJune 3, 2020 – Due to collaborative effort between the McDonough Lions Club and the City of McDonough, a USDA Farmers to Families Box Distribution site will be available to residents on Saturday, June 13, 2020, between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.  This free service, which provides boxes of fresh produce to residents, will be located in the parking lot of the McDonough High School at 100 Postmaster Drive in McDonough.  Please note that there is limited availability, with one box allowed per family, and once all of the boxes have been distributed, the event will conclude.

Participating residents will be directed to drive up to a station where a volunteer will load the box directly into the vehicle.  The approximately twenty-pound box will contain locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables.  It is expected that there will be a total of 1,920 boxes distributed during this event containing produce items such as carrots, sweet potatoes, green cabbage, lettuce, lemons, yellow squash, apples, oranges, etc.  Please note that specific items depend on availability.

McDonough Lions Club President Beverly Coley emphasized the importance of bringing resources to those in need, stating “The mission of the Lions Club is to serve and, considering the impact of COVID-19, it is vital that we take positive steps towards ensuring the needs of our community are being met.”

If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact Beverly Coley via email at tinglin51@yahoo.com or by phone at (770)689-6509.  Volunteers must wear a mask and gloves, use hand sanitizer as needed, and comply with social distancing guidelines.  A mask and gloves will be provided for any volunteers who do not already have them.

The Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, CFAP, was established to provide direct support to eligible farmers, ranchers, and agriculture producers who suffered losses as a result of supply chain disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  As a critical part of the program, the United States Department of Agriculture has implemented a recent initiative called the Farmers to Families Box Distribution Program which allows the USDA to partner with regional and local suppliers, whose workforce has been significantly impacted, to purchase and distribute $3 billion worth of agricultural products to those in need.
