McDonough High & Middle Schools Groundbreaking
Schools to be built with E-SPLOST funds approved by voters

HENRY COUNTY, GA – Ground is set to officially be broken on September 6 for the new McDonough High School and McDonough Middle School.  The new schools will be located along Postmaster Drive and Highway 155, approximately a mile from the current Henry County High School.

Both schools were approved as a part of the E-SPLOST project list put before voters in early 2016.

The impetus behind a new high school is the result of the current Academy for Advanced Studies needing a larger space to accommodate its growing, in-demand program.  New space was added on the current Henry County High School to enlarge the space for the college and career academy, but the academy has continued to grow in popularity with students and families all across the district.  Space is needed and it made more sense to build a separate new high school and call it McDonough High School as it serves only students in the McDonough area.

The new middle school will complete a district blueprint of building high schools and middle schools across from each other so they can share outdoor athletic facilities.  The current Henry County Middle School is also one of the oldest school buildings in the district.  The school system has discussed repurposing that building after the new middle school is completed.

McDonough High School was in existence until in 1954 when the school name was changed to Henry County High School and served students from all parts of the county.  Their mascot at the time was the Golden Tornado.  The new McDonough High School will retain the Warhawk mascot and logo currently used by Henry County High School, as will Henry County Middle School.

The public is invited to the groundbreaking event on September 6 at 3 p.m.  The ceremony will precede the evening’s regularly scheduled Henry County Board of Education Study Session slated for 5 p.m.
