Cornell, Miller share STAR Honors for Henry County
Students tie for highest SAT score, now move on to next round with STAR Teachers
HENRY COUNTY, GA – Abby Cornell and Will Miller shared the stage as the newest STAR Student winners for Henry County after the announcement was made at the annual STAR Breakfast hosted by the Henry County Chamber of Commerce. View STAR Sponsors.
Students earning the county’s STAR Student designation represent the highest score on the SAT among finalists from each high school – public and private – in Henry County.  The unique scenario of a tie for the top score between two of the 17 finalists was announced in front of a packed ballroom at Eagle’s Landing Country Club on Thursday, February 6.
Both students were accompanied by their chosen STAR Teacher who will also move on to the next stage of the statewide competition.  Cornell, a senior at Union Grove High School, chose teacher Ashleigh Eidson, while Miller, a senior at Strong Rock Christian School, chose teacher Rita Poole.  The two duos will compete against other student/teacher pairings in the region for the chance to move to the state level of the competition.
For a student to be a STAR Student at their respective high school, that student must have the highest SAT score and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of the class based on grade point average.
The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and the Georgia Department of Education sponsor the state STAR Program each year, but the Henry County Chamber of Commerce takes on the local recognition ceremony with sponsorship support from various businesses in the community.  This year, there were 21 sponsors for the event, ensuring that each honoree walked away with a commemorative award and a monetary prize.
The event was led by Chamber of Commerce President Joe Henning and Chamber Board Chair Christy Chewning, while Henry County Schools Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis and board members Holly Cobb, Annette Edwards, and Sophe Pope were on hand to congratulate individual school winners and announce the winners of this year’s top honor.
The two duos will now move on to the regional competition in Newnan on March 24 for a chance to then move on to the state STAR Student and Teacher Program in Duluth on April 27.
This is the 62nd year for the STAR program.  Since the beginning, the STAR program has recognized more than 24,000 students and their teachers from around the state.
