According to the most recent Census Bureau data available, Black people comprise approximately 14.2% of the U.S. population, but Black businesses comprise only 2.2% of the nation’s 5.7 million employer businesses (firms with more than one employee).

The Chamber supports all of our members year-round but this month during Black History Month, we choose to elevate the state of Black businesses in our society. The glaring statement above is part of the research reported and shared by authors Andre M. Perry and Carl Romer in an article "To expand the economy, invest in Black Business," published online by Brookings. For more insight, please click the link and read the article.

Recognizing that Black-owned businesses in our community help make up the statistics cited in the article, the Chamber is encouraging all to support Black-owned businesses not just during Black History Month, but all year long.

It is impossible to honor all of America's Black achievers and visionaries in February alone. So the Chamber decided to use the month to recognize the Black-owned businesses among our membership. If the month runs out, we will keep going. However, we noticed that not all Black-owned businesses have self-identified in our database. As a member of the Henry County Chamber, please let us know if your business is Black-owned and we will add you to our list for recognition!
